Salpingitis

Salpingitis is a type of female pelvic inflammatory disease caused by pathogens, mainly staph, strep, E. coli, gonococcus, Proteus, pneumococcus and Chlamydia. Most common after delivery, abortion or menstruation. Trauma to the birth canal and placental site during delivery/abortion, or menstrual endometrial shedding, are routes of infection; sometimes related to non-sterile procedures (IUD insertion, curettage, tubal patency test, iodized oil imaging). Frequent intercourse and menses intercourse also cause infection.

Common Symptoms

Lower abdominal pain, fever, discharge

Pathogens invade via the birth canal after delivery/abortion, or via non-sterile procedures and intercourse.

Treatment

Antibiotics, rest

Prevention

Menstrual and sexual hygiene, sterile procedures.
