Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is mixed infection by Gardnerella and anaerobes disrupting vaginal microecology, causing increased discharge with fishy odor and vulvar itching/burning. Types: hemophilic, corynebacterial, anaerobic vaginosis, Gardnerella vaginitis. It can spread by sexual contact, higher in promiscuous groups. Smear shows many pus cells and the pathogen. It often coexists with other STDs, altering presentation; with gonococcus, discharge becomes frankly purulent.
