Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis means benign invasion of endometrium into the myometrium with diffuse growth, characterized by ectopic endometrium and glands in the myometrium with surrounding myocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Hence it is called internal endometriosis, while pelvic endometriosis is external endometriosis. Many scholars consider them distinct; both are regulated by ovarian hormones.

Common Symptoms

Menstrual bleeding; endometriosis; exercise amenorrhea; uterine amenorrhea

Causes

More common in parous than nulliparous women; endometrium invades the myometrium.

Treatment

Hormonal medication, hysterectomy when severe

Prevention

Prompt treatment of uterine inflammation.
