Periodontal Abscess

Periodontal abscess is localized pus collection in a periodontal pocket, in patients with periodontitis, presenting with localized swelling, throbbing pain, tooth tenderness, and possible fever. Treatment: urgent drainage (through pocket/incision); scaling/root planing; irrigate pocket; antibiotics if cellulitis/spreading/systemic signs; analgesics; warm rinses; follow-up; treat underlying periodontitis; restore/maintain oral hygiene.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Infected periodontal pocket occludes, forming abscess.
