The pathology of disease

Hairy tongue is benign elongation/hyperkeratosis of filiform papillae on dorsal tongue, appearing white/yellow/black, associated with smoking, poor hygiene, antibiotics, coffee/tea, or mouthwash. Treatment: improve oral hygiene; gentle tongue brushing/scraping; stop irritants (smoking, antibiotics if possible, excessive mouthwash); hydration; usually resolves in weeks; biopsy if persistent atypical lesion to rule out other disease.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Defective desquamation of filiform papillae causes elongation/hyperkeratosis.
