Dermoid cyst

Dermoid cyst is a cystic teratoma composed of cysts lined by squamous epithelium; contains skin/hair follicles/sweat glands/long hair. Slow-growing. By site: ovarian, orbital, spinal. Rarely adults develop squamous cell carcinoma; young children may have yolk sac tumor.

Common Symptoms

Cystic mass; dorsal dermal sinus; persistent pain; sacral skin tag; cyst

Causes

Congenital; embryonic ectodermal remnant buried under skin/conjunctiva. Favors medial/lateral eyelid, orbital sutures, eyebrow/orbit/conjunctiva. Round/oval, usually walnut-sized, soft, tense when large; fibrous capsule, smooth, elastic, not attached to skin but adherent to periosteum. From embryonic epithelial remnants.

Prevention

Congenital; prevent residual/recurrence. Post-op hygiene; don't squeeze; anti-infectives; good mood.
