Ptosis is drooping of the upper eyelid due to levator palpebrae weakness/dislocation. Causes: congenital, involutional (aponeurotic dehiscence), neurologic (third-nerve palsy/Horner), myogenic (myasthenia). Clinical: upper-lid droop, brow elevation, chin-up posture; may block visual axis in children (amblyopia). Treatment: investigate cause (myasthenia/third-nerve palsy); surgical levator advancement/Muller muscle resection for cosmetic or visual-axis obstruction.
Upper-lid droop; brow elevation; chin-up posture; may block visual axis in children
Levator aponeurosis dehiscence/third-nerve palsy/Horner/myasthenia weakens upper-lid elevation.
Treat cause (myasthenia/third-nerve); surgical levator/Muller correction if visual axis/cosmesis
Screen children for amblyopia; surgical correction.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
