Pterygium is a triangular fibrovascular proliferation of bulbar conjunctiva extending onto the cornea, usually nasal, associated with chronic UV exposure/dust. Clinical: nasal wing-shaped growth, irritation, and induced astigmatism; it may encroach on the visual axis. Treatment: lubrication/UV protection for small lesions; surgical excision (with conjunctival autograft) if it threatens the visual axis or causes significant irritation/astigmatism; recurrence risk.
Nasal wing-shaped growth on cornea; irritation/foreign-body sensation; induced astigmatism; UV exposure history
Chronic UV/dust exposure causes elastotic degeneration and fibrovascular growth onto the cornea.
Lubrication/UV protection; surgical excision with conjunctival autograft if visual-axis threat
UV-blocking sunglasses; avoid dust exposure.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
