Symblepharon is adhesion between the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, usually from chemical/thermal burns, trachoma, or ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. It restricts eye movement and may cause corneal exposure. Treatment: treat underlying cicatricial disease; surgical lysis with mucus-membrane/amniotic membrane graft to prevent re-adhesion; lubricate and protect the cornea.
Restricted eye movement; fornix shallowing; corneal exposure; history of burn/cicatricial disease
Conjunctival scarring from burns/trachoma/pemphigoid fuses palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva.
Treat underlying disease; surgical lysis with amniotic/mucosa graft; protect cornea
Early burn treatment; amniotic membrane in acute burns.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
