Episcleritis is mild inflammation of the episclera (superficial to sclera), presenting as sectoral or diffuse bright-red eye with mild discomfort/irritation, usually self-limited. It may be simple or nodular. It differs from scleritis (deep boring pain, violaceous). Treatment: observation/artificial tears; topical NSAIDs or mild steroids for discomfort; investigate if recurrent/severe (systemic association less common than scleritis).
Sectoral bright-red eye; mild discomfort/irritation; no deep pain; self-limited
Mild inflammation of episcleral vessels causes sectoral redness, sparing deep sclera.
Observation/artificial tears; topical NSAIDs/mild steroids if discomfort
Observation; avoid triggers.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
