Neovascularization of the Iris

眼科

Common symptoms

眼充血、虹膜新生血管与...

The pathology of disease

Neovascularization of the iris (rubeosis iridis) is growth of abnormal fibrovascular membranes on the iris/anterior chamber angle, due to retinal ischemia from diabetic retinopathy, central retinal-vein occlusion, or ocular ischemia. It can cause neovascular glaucoma. Treatment: treat underlying retinal ischemia (panretinal photocoagulation); intravitreal anti-VEGF; control IOP; surgery if neovascular glaucoma.

Common Symptoms

Abnormal iris vessels; raised IOP/neovascular glaucoma; diabetic retinopathy/CRVO history

Causes and Pathogenesis

Retinal ischemia releases VEGF, growing fibrovascular membranes on iris/angle and occluding it.

Treatment

Panretinal photocoagulation; intravitreal anti-VEGF; control IOP; surgery if neovascular glaucoma

Preventive Measures

Control diabetic retinopathy; PRP timely.
