Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is acute sectoral visual-field loss due to embolic occlusion of a branch of the central retinal artery. Clinical: sudden monocular sectoral vision loss, with a wedge-shaped retinal infarct and embolus on fundus exam. Treatment: supportive; lower IOP if acute; evaluate and treat embolic source (carotid/cardiac) and vascular risk factors (the same as stroke prevention).
Sudden monocular sectoral visual-field loss; wedge retinal infarct; embolus visible
Embolus occludes a branch retinal artery, producing a wedge inner-retinal infarct.
Supportive; lower IOP if acute; embolic source/vascular risk workup
Control vascular risk; carotid/cardiac evaluation; antiplatelet.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
