Normal-Tension Glaucoma

Normal-tension glaucoma is optic-nerve cupping/visual-field loss with open angle and intraocular pressure consistently within the statistically normal range, due to susceptibility of the optic nerve to perfusion/ischemia. Treatment: lower IOP further by topical medications/low-pressure target, optimize ocular/perfusion pressure, treat systemic hypotension/cardiovascular disease; some use neuroprotective agents.

Common Symptoms

Optic-disc cupping/field loss; IOP within normal; open angle; vascular risk factors

Causes and Pathogenesis

Optic-nerve ischemia/susceptibility causes axonal loss despite normal IOP.

Treatment

Lower IOP further; optimize perfusion pressure; treat systemic vascular disease; neuroprotection

Preventive Measures

Control cardiovascular disease; low IOP target.
