Esophoria

Esophoria is a latent inward deviation of the eyes, controlled by fusion, manifesting on cover test or decomensating with fatigue/near work. It may cause asthenopia/eye strain after near work. Treatment: orthoptic convergence exercises; plus-lens/vision therapy for near esophoria; prism for symptomatic; strabismus surgery for large deviations refractory to conservative treatment.

Common Symptoms

Asthenopia after near work; headaches; inward deviation on cover test; decomensates when tired

Causes and Pathogenesis

Latent inward deviation held by fusion, often associated with convergence excess/AC/A.

Treatment

Convergence exercises/vision therapy; plus-lens for near; prism; surgery if large refractory
