Duane retraction syndrome is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CN VI nucleus/nerve dysgenesis with aberrant CN III innervation of lateral rectus), presenting with limited abduction, globe retraction and palpebral fissure narrowing on adduction. Most are type I (limited abduction). Treatment: conservative observation; strabismus surgery (recession, no resection of the affected muscle) for abnormal head posture or significant deviation; avoid resection of the affected lateral rectus.
Limited abduction; globe retraction/palpebral narrowing on adduction; abnormal head turn; congenital
