The pathology of disease

Strabismus is misalignment of the eyes, one deviating inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), up/down (hyper/hypotropia), classified as concomitant (non-paralytic) or paralytic. It causes diplopia in adults and amblyopia in children. Treatment: correct refractive error; treat amblyopia early (critical period up to 7-9 years); orthoptic exercises; strabismus surgery for stable deviations to restore alignment and binocular function.

Common Symptoms

Eye deviation; diplopia (adults); amblyopia (children); abnormal head posture; by type (concomitant/paralytic)

Causes and Pathogenesis

Binocular/fusion imbalance or extraocular-muscle/nerve palsy causes ocular misalignment.

Treatment

Refractive correction; amblyopia treatment; orthoptics; strabismus surgery for stable deviation

Preventive Measures

Early detection; treat amblyopia before age 7-9.
