Amblyopia (lazy eye) is reduced best-corrected vision in an eye due to abnormal visual development in infancy/childhood, from strabismus, anisometropia, or visual deprivation (cataract/ptosis). It is the commonest cause of monocular visual impairment in children. Treatment is time-sensitive: correct refractive error, remove deprivation (cataract/ptosis surgery), and occlude (patch) or penalize the better eye; most effective before age 7-9.
Reduced vision in one eye; strabismus; poor depth perception; detected on childhood vision screen
Abnormal visual input in childhood causes cortical suppression of the weaker eye.
Correct refraction; remove deprivation; patch/penalize the better eye; treat before age 7-9
Childhood vision screening; treat early; remove cataracts/ptosis timely.
It is recommended to visit the Ophthalmology/Strabismus-Pediatric department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
