Nystagmus is involuntary, rhythmic oscillation of the eyes, classified as congenital (infantile) or acquired (vestibular, neurologic, toxic, or drug-induced). Acquired nystagmus may indicate central vestibular/cerebellar disease. Treatment: investigate the underlying cause (neurologic/vestibular/toxic); treat accordingly; correct refractive error; low-vision aids; strabismus surgery (Kestenbaum) for congenital abnormal head posture; no cure for established congenital nystagmus.
Involuntary rhythmic eye oscillation; reduced vision/oscillopsia; by cause (congenital/vestibular/central/toxic)
Disorder of gaze-holding/vestibular systems causes rhythmic oscillation of the eyes.
