Incubation 5-7 days; bilateral (one eye then the other in 2-7 days); foreign-body sensation/burning/photophobia/lacrimation/mild visual loss.
Pharyngeal injection; myalgia; yellow-white upper tarsal spots; sore throat; corneal epithelial erosion; visual disturbance; lacrimation; conjunctival injection; keratitis; reduced corneal sensation
(1) Etiology: adenovirus (DNA virus, nuclear replication; 57 serotypes, 21 human). EKC: Ad-8/19/29/37; pharyngoconjunctival fever: Ad-3/4/7; follicular conjunctivitis: Ad-1-11/14-17/19/20. Subepithelial infiltrates = immune reaction. (2) Pathogenesis: nuclear replication → direct cell injury + immune-mediated; mucosal hemorrhage/edema/exudate/infiltration; degeneration/necrosis/desquamation; inclusions.
