Diffuse otitis externa (swimmer's ear) is inflammation/infection of the external ear canal, often after swimming, causing itching, pain on tragal pressure, canal edema, and discharge. It is usually bacterial (Pseudomonas/Staphylococcus). Treatment: clean the canal; topical antibiotic-steroid ear drops; keep the ear dry; oral antibiotics if cellulitis/systemic; avoid cotton swabs.
