Acute suppurative mastoiditis is purulent infection of the mastoid air cells, a complication of acute otitis media, presenting with postauricular pain/swelling, fever, protruding pinna, and otorrhea. It may form subperiosteal abscess. Treatment: IV broad-spectrum antibiotics; myringotomy for drainage; cortical mastoidectomy if subperiosteal abscess or failure to improve; watch for intracranial complications.
