Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is abnormal bone remodeling of the otic capsule causing stapes fixation and progressive conductive hearing loss, often in young adults (familial, female predominance, worsens in pregnancy). Treatment: observation with hearing aid; stapedotomy/stapedectomy with prosthesis for significant conductive loss; cochlear otosclerosis may add sensorineural loss; good surgical outcome.

Progressive conductive hearing loss; young adult; familial; Carhart notch; worsens in pregnancy

Causes and Pathogenesis

Abnormal otic-capsule bone fixation of the stapes footplate impairs sound conduction.

Treatment

Hearing aid; stapedotomy/stapedectomy with prosthesis for significant loss
