Labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis is inflammation of the inner-ear labyrinth, causing vertigo plus sensorineural hearing loss/tinnitus (unlike vestibular neuritis, which has no hearing loss). It may be viral (serous) or bacterial/suppurative (meningogenic/otogenic, urgent). Treatment: viral - vestibular suppressants, early steroids, vestibular rehab; bacterial - urgent hospital, IV antibiotics, myringotomy/drainage, and meningitis management; monitor for complications.

Common Symptoms

Vertigo + sensorineural hearing loss/tinnitus; nausea/vomiting; by serous (viral)/suppurative (bacterial)

Causes and Pathogenesis

Viral/bacterial inflammation of the labyrinth causes audiovestibular dysfunction.

Treatment

Viral: suppressants/steroids/rehab; bacterial: urgent IV antibiotics/drainage, treat meningitis

Preventive Measures

Treat otitis/meningitis; vestibular rehab.
