Acute rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal mucosa causing congestion/rhinorrhea/sneezing/itching, either viral (common cold), allergic (seasonal/perennial), or irritant. Treatment: saline irrigation/spray; oral/intranasal antihistamines for allergic; intranasal corticosteroids; oral/topical decongestants short-term; avoid triggers; antibiotics only if secondary bacterial sinusitis; humidification.
