Vasomotor Rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis (nonallergic rhinitis) is nasal hyperreactivity to irritants/weather/emotion, causing rhinorrhea/nasal congestion/sneezing without IgE allergy. Treatment: avoid triggers (irritants/weather changes); intranasal antihistamine (azelastine); intranasal ipratropium for rhinorrhea; intranasal corticosteroids; saline irrigation; decongestants short-term; treat associated triggers; surgery for refractory inferior turbinate hypertrophy.

Causes and Pathogenesis

Autonomic dysregulation causes nasal vascular/glandular hyperreactivity to triggers.

Treatment

Avoid triggers; intranasal antihistamine/ipratropium/steroids; saline; surgery if refractory

Preventive Measures

Avoid irritants; saline irrigation; humidification.
