Rhinoscleroma (scleroma) is a low-infectivity chronic granulomatous inflammation caused by Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis (Frisch bacillus). Lesions start in the nose, spread to the upper respiratory tract forming hard inflammatory masses that cause deformity or obstruction.
Dry/burning throat; dyspnea; bone lysis; olfactory disturbance; epistaxis
(1) Etiology: K. rhinoscleromatis is a Gram-negative short rod with gelatinous capsule, non-motile; transmission routes are unclear but long-term contact is common; regional prevalence (e.g., Jiaodong, China). (2) Pathogenesis: lesions start in the nose and spread upward, causing hard granulomatous masses and deformity/obstruction.
Drug therapy, surgery, supportive therapy
Early cases are atypical; examine nasal secretions/cultures promptly. Personal hygiene; avoid shared utensils. 5% Coptis chinensis drops or 20% compound drops control disease quickly; combined with blood-activating, hardness-softening Chinese medicines for vascular complications.
It is recommended to visit the ENT department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
