Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) is abscess of peritonsillar space; adolescents/young adults; uvula deviation; trismus; fever; emergency drainage.

Symptoms

Sore throat; fever; trismus; muffled 'hot potato' voice; uvula deviation; unilateral tonsillar swelling

Causes

Group A strep; anaerobes; tonsillar infection spread.

Treatment

Needle drainage/incision; penicillin (or clindamycin); IV fluids; tonsillectomy if recurrent
