Otomycosis Externa

Otomycosis externa is subacute/chronic external auditory canal inflammation by fungi (invasive or commensal opportunists), often with bacterial superinfection. Symptoms: discomfort/distension/intense itch/fullness/hearing loss. Smear/culture; biopsy if needed.

Common Symptoms

Aural itch; ear pain; bacterial infection; external canal tinea; tinnitus; low fever; otorrhea; vertigo; enlarged auricle

Causes and Pathogenesis

Fungi thrive in warm humid environments; water/secretions/antibiotic drops predispose. Common: Penicillium/Aspergillus/Candida.

Treatment

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

No ear picking with dirty objects; keep canal clean/dry; treat otitis media; antibiotic eardrops.
