Childhood Autism (Autistic Disorder)

Childhood autism (autistic disorder) is a pervasive developmental disorder with onset before 3 years, characterized by impaired reciprocal social interaction, impaired communication, and restricted, repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior/interests. It occurs on a spectrum (ASD). Causes are neurodevelopmental with strong genetic contribution. Treatment: early intensive behavioral/educational intervention (e.g., ABA/TEACCH), speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and manage associated comorbidities (seizures, ADHD, anxiety).
