Electrolyte imbalance is a disturbance of serum sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, or phosphate, commonly encountered in renal disease, diuretic use, GI losses, critical illness, and endocrine disorders. Clinical effects range from asymptomatic (mild) to life-threatening (arrhythmia, tetany, seizures, altered mental status). Treatment: identify and reverse underlying cause, correct electrolytes cautiously, and monitor cardiac/neurologic status.
Weakness; arrhythmia; confusion; cramps; tetany; nausea; often asymptomatic on routine labs
Renal/GI/endocrine disturbances or drugs alter serum electrolyte concentrations, impairing neuromuscular, cardiac, and membrane function.
Identify/treat underlying cause; cautious electrolyte repletion; monitor ECG and serial labs
Monitor electrolytes in renal disease/diuretics/illness; replete losses; treat endocrine cause.
It is recommended to visit the Internal Medicine department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
