Bacteremia

急诊科

Common symptoms

寒战、休克、腹泻、呼吸急促、腹痛、恶心、菌血症、胃肠道症状、脓肿、低血压

The pathology of disease

Bacteremia occurs when external bacteria enter the bloodstream via skin/mucosal portals, multiply, and disseminate—often severe. Catheters/surgical stomas commonly cause it, leading to acute metastatic multiorgan infection. Blood cultures must be taken immediately and targeted treatment started promptly.

Common Symptoms

Chills; shock; diarrhea; tachypnea; abdominal pain; nausea; bacteremia; GI symptoms; abscess; hypotension

Causes and Pathogenesis

Surgery on infected oral tissue/routine dental work, lower urinary tract catheterization, abscess drainage, and foreign-body colonization (especially IV/intracardiac catheters, urinary catheters, stomas) cause transient bacteremia. Typical Gram-negative bacteremia is intermittent/opportunistic: harmless in healthy people but severe in immunocompromised/critically ill/chemotherapy/malnourished patients. Primary sites are lung, genitourinary tract, GI tract, soft tissue, pressure ulcers; also occurs after dental work in patients with valvular heart disease/prosthetic valves/intravascular prostheses.

Treatment

Drug therapy, rehabilitation

Preventive Measures

Early eradication of obvious/occult pyogenic foci reduces bacteremia. Childhood infectious diseases (measles, influenza, pertussis) frequently precipitate severe bacterial respiratory superinfection and bacteremia—protect such children. Treat even minor skin wounds promptly. Improving environmental/personal hygiene, nutrition, and pediatric care will reduce incidence.

Department to Visit

It is recommended to visit the Emergency department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
