Hypercarotenemia is elevated blood beta-carotene causing orange-yellow skin discoloration, most prominent on palms, soles, and face, but sparing sclera (distinguishes from jaundice). It is usually benign from high intake of carrots, pumpkin, oranges, papaya; also seen in hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and lipoproteinemia. No specific treatment; reduce carotenoid intake; distinguish from jaundice.
Orange-yellow skin on palms/soles/face; sclera not yellow; asymptomatic
Excess dietary beta-carotene or impaired conversion to vitamin-A accumulates in stratum corneum, causing yellow-orange pigmentation.
Reduce high-carotenoid foods; evaluate underlying hypothyroidism/diabetes; no toxic risk
Balanced diet; distinguish from jaundice clinically.
It is recommended to visit the Dermatology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
