Contact Urticaria

Contact urticaria is wheals/angioedema on contact with substance (foods: fish/egg/peanut; plants: nettles; latex; animals; chemicals; cosmetics), at contact site within minutes. Treatment: identify/avoid trigger; H1 antihistamines; topical corticosteroids for residual dermatitis; skin-prick/patch testing; protective gloves/clothing; epinephrine if anaphylaxis; occupational measures; follow-up allergy/dermatology.

Common Symptoms

Wheals/angioedema at contact site; minutes after exposure; by food/plant/latex/chemical

Causes and Pathogenesis

Immediate IgE-mediated or non-immunologic mast-cell release at contact site.

Treatment

Antihistamines; avoid trigger; topical steroids; testing; epinephrine if anaphylaxis

Preventive Measures

Avoid triggers; protective gloves; allergy testing.
