Secondary syphilis is a chronic systemic STD caused by T. pallidum, mainly sexually transmitted, involving almost any organ. It causes mucocutaneous lesions and lymphadenopathy, and is transplacental causing congenital syphilis.
Macule; intercostal neuralgia; lymphadenopathy; station doctor; pustule; bone pain; fatigue; reduced immunity
Sexual contact accounts for >95% of transmission. Infectivity is highest early and declines; after >4 years it is minimal. Pregnant women transmit transplacentally causing abortion/preterm/stillbirth/congenital syphilis; earlier maternal disease = greater fetal risk, even latent syphilis is infectious. Secondary syphilis is the hematogenous dissemination phase causing widespread small foci in skin/mucosa/bones/viscera/sense organs/CNS. Symptoms appear 1 week to months after chancre. Mucocutaneous lesions contain many treponemes (highly infectious); untreated, they lay the groundwork for later visceral/neurosyphilis. Prompt adequate treatment prevents tertiary disease.
Drug therapy, supportive therapy
