Granuloma inguinale (donovanosis) is a chronic mildly contagious STD caused by Klebsiella granulomatis. In infected tissue the organism appears as intracellular oval bodies (Donovan bodies). It features granulomatous plaques, painless ulcers on anogenital sites, and autoinoculation.
Papule; lymphadenopathy; station doctor; depigmentation; granuloma; seropurulent discharge
Besides sexual transmission, it can be spread by Phthirus pubis; besides genital/femoral sites it may involve face/back. K. granulomatis is pathogenic only to humans. At the portal it first forms a slowly progressive papule/subcutaneous nodule, then an ulcer extending to surrounding tissue; pathology is dense inflammatory infiltrate.
Drug therapy, supportive therapy
Complete treatment; return for follow-up; avoid sex until both patient and partner are cured; use condoms. Sex partners within 60 days of symptom onset should be examined/treated. Avoid promiscuous sex.
It is recommended to visit the STD department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
