Trichofolliculoma is a hamartoma. It mostly occurs in males aged 18-49. Lesions usually occur on the face, especially along the nasal alae, occasionally on scalp or neck, rarely on vulva; asymptomatic. Lesions are solitary dome-shaped papules 0.5-1.0 cm in diameter with a central pore opening that can express sebum-like material; characteristic finding is one or more soft white vellus hairs emerging from the central opening.
Papule; nodule; white eyebrows; sparse/lateral eyebrow loss; tumor cell infiltration; firm tumor
This tumor tends toward hair differentiation. Multiple trichofolliculomas are autosomal dominant with family history; solitary ones have no family history. The tumor lies in the dermis, encapsulated by well-defined connective tissue, with a single cystic structure filled with keratin and sometimes hair shafts; occasionally 2-3 cysts cluster together. The cyst wall is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium connected to the epidermis. Many bundles of proliferating epithelial tissue radiate outward from the cyst center, sometimes forming immature hair follicles; sebaceous glands and small keratin cysts are also seen.
Surgery; drug therapy; supportive care
No direct prevention; focus on lifestyle: quit smoking, balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, and proper exercise to boost immunity. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment are important.
It is recommended to visit the dermatology department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
