Trombiculosis

Chiggers (red bugs/harvest mites); life cycle: egg/larva/nymph/adult. Larvae on rodents, nymphs/adults free-living. Salivary enzymes dissolve subcutaneous tissue; pruritic papules/erythema → eschar → ulcer.

Common Symptoms

Hyperkeratosis; papule; pustule; wheal; nausea; secondary infection; crust; pruritus

Causes and Pathogenesis

(1) Etiology: adults/nymphs non-biting (feed on eggs/plant juices); larvae parasitic on mammals/birds/reptiles/amphibians/humans. (2) Pathogenesis: larvae attracted by host odor; chelicerae inject saliva; feed 40-72 h (up to 10 days).

Drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

Patriot health campaigns; clear weeds; rat control; 0.5% γ-HCH / 0.2% dichlorvos sprays.
