Schizoaffective disorder is a psychotic disorder in which a major mood episode (manic, depressive, or mixed) occurs concurrently with schizophrenia-spectrum symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, disorganization), with psychotic symptoms persisting for at least 2 weeks in the absence of prominent mood symptoms. It is less common than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Treatment: antipsychotic (often with mood stabilizer or antidepressant), plus psychosocial rehabilitation.
Concurrent psychosis (delusions/hallucinations) and mood episode (mania/depression); psychotic symptoms persist beyond mood episode; functional impairment
Overlapping genetic/neurobiological vulnerabilities of schizophrenia and bipolar/mood disorder cause a mixed clinical picture.
Antipsychotic; mood stabilizer/antidepressant as indicated; psychosocial rehabilitation; family support
Early detection; medication adherence; family psychoeducation.
It is recommended to visit the Psychiatry department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
