Hysteria (dissociative/conversion disorder) is characterized by loss or alteration of physical/sensory/motor functions (paralysis, aphonia, blindness, anesthesia, convulsions) or dissociative symptoms (amnesia, fugue, identity disturbance) that suggest a medical condition but are not explained by organic disease, and are associated with psychological stress or conflict. Onset is often abrupt. Treatment: psychotherapy (insight/behavioral), reassurance, physical therapy, and avoid reinforcing secondary gain; screen for organic disease.
Sensory/motor loss (paralysis/aphohia/blindness) without organic cause; dissociative amnesia/fugue; emotional outburst; associated with stress; abrupt onset
Unconscious psychological conflict/stress is converted into somatic/dissociative symptoms, often with secondary gain.
Psychotherapy; reassurance; physical therapy; treat comorbid anxiety/depression; avoid reinforcing secondary gain
Stress management; early counseling; family support; avoid iatrogenic reinforcement.
It is recommended to visit the Psychiatry department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
