Alzheimer disease dementia is the dementia syndrome caused by Alzheimer pathology (amyloid plaques and tau tangles), characterized by insidious progressive episodic-memory impairment and global cognitive decline (aphasia/apraxia/agnosia/executive dysfunction), with behavioral/psychiatric symptoms as it advances. It is the most common late-life dementia. Treatment: cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, caregiver support, and management of behavioral symptoms; anti-amyloid antibodies in selected early cases.
