Palmar and plantar fibromatosis

Palmar and plantar fibromatosis includes two diseases, palmar fibromatosis and plantar fibromatosis, which are similar in histopathology, invasive pattern and tendency to recur after excision, though the two rarely occur together.

Causes

(1) Etiology. The cause is unclear; it may be related to environmental, genetic and dietary factors and to emotional and nutritional factors during pregnancy. (2) Pathogenesis. The pathogenesis is unclear. On biopsy the tumor cells are spindle-shaped with wavy nuclei, arranged in interlacing bundles within a wavy collagenous stroma; early lesions are cellular while late lesions have markedly reduced cellularity.

Prevention

The cause is unclear and may be related to environmental, genetic and dietary factors and to emotional and nutritional factors during pregnancy, so direct prevention of the primary cause is not possible. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment are important. For patients with a family history, chromosomal examination before marriage is advised to avoid transmitting the disease to offspring.
