Basal cell carcinoma, also called rodent ulcer, is the most common skin cancer and the most common malignant eyelid tumor (>50%). Slightly more in males and in the elderly (peak 50-60 years). It grows locally invasively and rarely metastasizes, but if untreated or mishandled it can severely destroy ocular tissues and even invade paranasal sinuses and intracranial structures, causing death. It favors exposed sites (scalp, face) in outdoor workers with fair skin, related to chronic sun exposure; chronic inorganic arsenic intake also contributes.

Basal cell tumor may derive from primitive epithelial germ cells, mainly composed of stroma-dependent pluripotent basaloid cells differentiating toward epidermis or adnexa — a low-grade malignancy. It often arises on chronic radiodermatitis at chronic X-ray-exposed sites, on burn scars and other scars, and on hamartomas such as sebaceous nevus and verrucous epidermal nevus. It favors exposed sites (scalp, face) in fair-skinned outdoor workers, related to chronic sun exposure; chronic inorganic arsenic intake also contributes.
Surgery; drug therapy; supportive care
With modern treatment, timely-treated basal cell carcinoma has mortality below 2% and good prognosis. Patients should maintain nutrition, immunity, good lifestyle and positive mood.
It is recommended to visit the oncological surgery department; before the visit you may first book an appointment and connect with experts through this platform.
