Leiomyosarcoma

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignancy of smooth muscle; common in males >40; single/few nodules <5 cm; prognosis depends on site/size. Retroperitoneal most common, painful. IVC leiomyosarcoma symptoms vary by level. Local invasion + hematogenous spread are main routes.

Common Symptoms

Cystic mass; muscle tear; muscle contracture; nodule; increased mitoses; severe pain; clasp-knife sign

Causes

Unknown; possibly environment/genetics/diet/pregnancy. Gross: gray/gray-red fish-flesh cut with hemorrhage/necrosis; long spindle cells with clear membranes, eosinophilic cytoplasm, myofibrils, parallel/interlacing bundles.

Treatment

Supportive care; rehabilitation

Prevention

No effective prevention; early detection/treatment; exercise; safety.
