Osteochondroma

Osteochondroma (exostosis, cartilaginous exostosis) is the most common benign bone tumor of childhood. Arises from one side of metaphysis, growing outward. Solitary vs multiple hereditary (diaphyseal aclasis), the latter hereditary and causes limb deformity.

Common Symptoms

Bony outgrowth; chondrodysplasia; bone mass

Causes

Congenital germ plasm defect; displaced epiphyseal plate; residual periosteal cells; incomplete periosteal growth; failed metaphyseal modeling. Related to acid mucopolysaccharide metabolism (urinary excretion elevated in children).

Treatment

Supportive care; rehabilitation; surgery

Prevention

Avoid carcinogens; boost immunity; healthy lifestyle; exercise; diet.
