Chondroma

Chondroma is a common benign bone tumor. Enchondroma (medullary) most common; periosteal (parosteal) rare. Multiple hemangiomas + chondromas = Maffucci syndrome. Solitary common; multiple symmetric = Ollier disease (enchondromatosis) with limb deformity.

Common Symptoms

Digit swelling; bone pain; forearm pronation deformity; genu varum/valgus/hip varus; diffuse periosteal thickening

Causes

Bone trauma → cartilage injury → qi/blood stasis. Viral infection → chondritis (cartilage avascular, necrosis, pus/granulation). Radiation, genetics, developmental errors.

Treatment

Surgery; drug therapy; supportive care; rehabilitation

Prevention

No prevention; malignant change treated as malignant bone tumor. Diet: limit salt/smoked/nitrite; ideal weight; varied diet; high fiber; low fat; limit alcohol.
