The pathology of disease

Carcinoid syndrome is flushing, diarrhea, wheezing, right-sided valvular disease from serotonin-secreting neuroendocrine tumor; usually small bowel with liver mets; octreotide.

Symptoms

Cutaneous flushing; diarrhea; wheezing; right-sided heart murmur; telangiectasia; low 5-HIAA; small bowel tumor with liver mets

Causes

Neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumor; serotonin/kinins; liver metastases bypass metabolism.

Treatment

Octreotide/lanreotide; surgery/embolization; chemotherapy; valve surgery; nutrition
