Renal Tumor

肿瘤外科

Common symptoms

腹部肿块、发烧、体重减轻、血尿、腰背痛、尿暗黑色

The pathology of disease

Renal tumor is one of the more common urinary-tract tumors, mostly malignant. Common clinical forms include renal-cell carcinoma arising from renal parenchyma, nephroblastoma, and transitional-cell papillary tumors arising in the renal pelvis and calyces. Incidence differs by type but overall rises year by year, possibly related to widespread imaging and routine physical examination. Renal tumors can occur at any age, with different male:female ratios. Renal tumors account for 2%-3% of adult malignancies; nephroblastoma is the most common solid malignancy in infants, accounting for about 20% of infant malignancies.

Common Symptoms

Abdominal mass; fever; weight loss; hematuria; lumbago; dark urine

Causes and Pathogenesis

The cause remains unclear; related risk factors include: 1. Smoking: increases renal-tumor risk, dose-related; risk drops 25 years after cessation. 2. Occupation: cadmium-exposed workers have higher prevalence; coke-oven, printing and petrochemical workers relatively higher. 3. Urban/rural and socioeconomic: urban residents have higher prevalence than rural. 4. Hormones and drugs: chemicals, especially hormones, increase prevalence; hypertensive patients on diuretics have higher risk. 5. Other: long-term dialysis patients with renal failure easily develop renal cancer; obesity, diabetes, transfusion history, radiation, alcohol and diet may also be related.

Treatment

Drug therapy, rehabilitation, surgery

Preventive Measures

Daily prevention: 1. Ensure adequate sleep — important for qi/blood generation and kidney-essence preservation. 2. Match work to capacity; moderate labor and sexual activity to nourish kidney essence. 3. Rub palms together until warm, place on lower back, massage up/down until warm; twice daily, ~200 times each — supplements kidney and gathers qi. 4. Keep feet warm; avoid pointing feet at AC/fan while sleeping; avoid barefoot walking on damp ground. 5. Keep bowel movements regular — also nourishes kidney; when constipated, press kidney areas with both hands' backs to stimulate kidney qi and speed defecation; walking with back-hands pressing kidney areas eases lumbar soreness. 6. Urinate promptly — one of the best kidney-care habits. 7. Both Chinese and Western drugs have side effects; some routinely taken drugs damage kidney — stay alert, read labels carefully, consult experts before long-term use.
