Occipital-Lobe Tumor

肿瘤外科

Common symptoms

枕叶受损、视觉失认、偏盲、色觉丧失、象限性偏盲、同向性偏盲、视物变形

The pathology of disease

The occipital lobe is small; tumors purely in the occipital lobe are also rare. Occipital-lobe tumors often simultaneously involve the parietal and posterior temporal lobes. The most common are gliomas (~1.46% of intracranial gliomas), meningiomas (~0.74% of intracranial meningiomas); other tumors are rarer. Physiologically, the occipital lobe is the highest visual analyzer — the so-called 'visual center'. Main clinical manifestation of occipital-lobe tumor is visual disturbance. This is a neoplastic disease currently thought due to proto-oncogene activation, but the exact cause is unclear; possibly related to environmental, hereditary, dietary factors, and prenatal emotional/nutritional factors. By tumor location and infiltration, early patients mostly have only contralateral visual-field defect, amblyopia or color vision loss.

Common Symptoms

Occipital-lobe damage; visual agnosia; hemianopia; color-vision loss; quadrantanopia; homonymous hemianopia; metamorphopsia

Causes and Pathogenesis

Treatment

Surgery, drug therapy, supportive therapy

Preventive Measures

A good attitude is very important: stay cheerful, optimistic, open-minded and firmly confident of overcoming the disease. Do not fear; only then can subjective initiative be mobilized and immune function improved.

Department to Visit

It is recommended to visit the Surgical Oncology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
