Bone tumor = tumor arising in bone or its accessory tissues (vessels, nerves, marrow, etc.), a common disease. Like other body tissues, the exact cause is unknown. Bone tumors are divided into benign and malignant. Benign bone tumors are easy to cure with good prognosis; malignant ones progress rapidly with poor prognosis and high mortality; no satisfactory treatment exists yet. Malignant bone tumors may be primary or secondary - metastatic from other organs via blood/lymphatics or direct invasion. Another group is tumor-like lesions: tissue lacks neoplastic cell morphology but has tumor-like destructive ecology/behavior; usually localized and easy to cure.
Pulmonary metastasis; multiple rib fractures; bone destruction; sternal tenderness
Bone-tumor cause remains unknown. Previously it was thought that injury (especially chronic minor trauma) and chronic infection as acute/chronic stimuli cause bone-cell and surrounding-tissue proliferation leading to bone tumors. Recent experimental work: Fujinaga used Harvey/Moloney sarcoma viruses to produce many murine osteosarcoma models; Finkel used different isotopes/viruses; others used radioactive materials (radium, strontium). These etiologic factors have been confirmed by many scholars. Bone-tumor onset age: males 15-24, females 5-14, possibly related to sex differences in bone growth and endocrine-development timing/duration.
Supportive therapy, rehabilitation, surgery
Daily prevention. I. Lifestyle: 1. Strengthen exercise to build fitness, disease resistance and immunity, prevent viral infection. 2. Reduce/avoid radiation, especially during adolescent bone development. 3. Avoid trauma, especially to long-bone epiphyses in adolescents. II. Diet: change bad habits; eat less/no high-nitrite pickled vegetables/salted fish; less benzo(a)pyrene-rich grilled/smoked/fried foods; less aflatoxin-rich moldy/fermented foods. III. Emotional: stay cheerful, optimistic, even-tempered.
It is recommended to visit the Surgical Oncology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
