Gaucher disease is an autosomal-recessive deficiency of glucocerebrosidase causing glucocerebroside accumulation in macrophages (Gaucher cells). Type 1 (non-neuronopathic, most common): hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, bone pain/crises, osteoporosis, bleeding. Type 2/3 are neuronopathic with neurologic involvement. Treatment: enzyme-replacement therapy (imiglucerase) or substrate-reduction therapy; supportive bone/blood management.
Hepatosplenomegaly; anemia/thrombocytopenia; bone pain/crises; easy bruising; fatigue; neurologic signs (type 2/3)
Glucocerebrosidase deficiency causes glucocerebroside-laden macrophages infiltrating liver/spleen/bone marrow, causing cytopenias and bone disease.
Enzyme-replacement therapy; substrate-reduction therapy; supportive (transfusion, orthopedic care)
Genetic screening (Ashkenazi Jewish); carrier screening; early treatment.
It is recommended to visit the Hematology department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
